Built by a working screenwriter, for how I actually work.

The core: story and script development

Writers Room is built around the work before and around the pages: breaking story, structuring beats, planning shots and pitching the project. Those tools come first. The business tools further down are there if you want them, and you can ignore them if you don't.

Infinite nested story wall

Index cards on a corkboard that goes as deep as your story does. Open a card into its own board for acts, sequences or episodes.

Beat generators

Start from structure templates and turn a logline into a set of beat cards you can rewrite and rearrange.

Storyboard frames

Lay out frames and sketch right in the app, next to the scene they belong to.

Pitch-doc templates

One-pagers, series bibles and pitch decks built from your project, ready to print or export.

Imports your scripts

Drop in PDF, Final Draft, Fountain, Word or Markdown files, plus images, and keep them next to your story wall.

Optional extras for the business side

Once a project is moving, the same file can also track the career around it. Use any of these, or none.

Portfolio and resume

Generate a portfolio page, links page and resume from the same data. Exports files you host anywhere.

Social planner

Draft posts with per-platform character limits and schedule them on your calendar. Drafts offline; you copy and post them yourself.

Calendar

Deadlines, festival dates, meetings and follow-ups in one view. Exports to your calendar app (.ics).

Business tracking

Submissions, contacts and expenses: know what went where, who to follow up with, and what it cost.

FAQ

Where does my data live?In your browser's own storage (IndexedDB) on your own computer, tied to the file or address you opened. Nothing is sent to a server, there's no account, and the seller never sees your work. It saves automatically as you work. Because it lives in the browser, treat the backup file (next question) as your real safe copy.
How do I back up and restore everything?Click Back up everything in the left sidebar (or Settings › Your data). You get one .json file holding all your projects, story walls, documents, uploads, calendar, contacts and settings. Home shows a reminder if your last backup is more than 7 days old. To restore, open Settings › Your data › Restore from backup file (or drop the .json onto the app). It asks you to confirm and saves a version of your current studio first. Keep copies in Dropbox, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or on a USB stick.
What happens if I clear my browser data, or my computer dies?Clearing a browser's site data removes what Writers Room has saved in it, and a dead or lost computer takes it with it. That is the trade-off of keeping everything local instead of on someone's server. It's also why backup is one click and why the app nags you: keep a recent backup file somewhere outside the browser (cloud drive, USB stick, email to yourself) and you can restore on any computer in a minute. The app also keeps rolling version snapshots, but those live in the same browser, so they don't replace a backup file.
How do I restore, or move to another computer?Open Writers Room on the other computer and drop the backup .json onto it (or use Settings › Your data › Restore from file). It asks you to confirm, and saves a version of your current studio before restoring.
What if something goes wrong?Writers Room keeps rolling version history snapshots in your browser (Settings › Version history), so you can roll back to an earlier state.
Is there cloud sync? Not built in for buyers. Your data stays local. To work on several machines, move a backup file between them.
How do I get updates, and which version do I have?Every 1.x update is free. When a new build ships, the store emails all buyers a download link. Your version number shows in the corner of the app and in the browser tab (e.g. "Writers Room v1.7").
How is the early-bird limit enforced? The EARLYBIRD code is capped at 100 uses by the store's checkout (Gumroad). The app itself never phones home.
Which features are offline?Everything you create and edit (story wall, beat generators, storyboards, pitch docs, calendar, business tracker) runs fully offline and stays on your computer. The portfolio builder and social planner are offline too, but they only draft and export: you get HTML pages or post text to host or publish wherever you like. Writers Room never posts or uploads anything for you.
Does it work offline?Yes. Fonts and the PDF importer load from the web when you're online. Without a connection the app falls back to system fonts, and PDF import needs a connection.
Why are there business tools in a story tool?Script and story work is the core: the story wall, beat generators, storyboards and pitch docs. The submissions tracker, contacts, expenses, calendar, portfolio builder and social planner exist because working screenwriters end up juggling those things in a spreadsheet next to the corkboard. They are separate sections in the sidebar. Use the ones you want and never open the rest.
How does it compare to Scrivener, Plottr, WriterDuet and Arc Studio? They're good tools that do different jobs, and plenty of writers will use Writers Room next to one of them. Honest summary: Scrivener is a mature one-time-purchase desktop app for long-form drafting, with a corkboard and binder. Plottr is a dedicated visual plotting and timeline tool. WriterDuet and Arc Studio are screenplay editors with proper formatting, and they offer real-time collaboration and cloud sync. Writers Room is none of those: it is local-first (your data stays on your computer, no account) and one-time-priced, with an infinite nested story wall, beat generators, storyboards, pitch docs and an optional business side in one file. It is not a script formatter and has no real-time collaboration. Write your pages in the editor you like; use Writers Room for the development, pitching and tracking around them. Check each product's own site for its current features and pricing.
Is it a screenplay formatter or a collaboration tool?No to both. Keep writing pages in Final Draft, WriterDuet, Arc Studio or any Fountain editor. Writers Room is the desk around the script: development, pitching and the business side. It is single-user and local, so there's no live co-writing.
